COMPOSITION PROGRAM

The Cortona Sessions composition program is designed to provide composers with high-quality premiere performances in conjunction with a valuable and educational professional experience. Students accepted as participants into the composition program will enjoy the following:

     â€¢ world premieres of 1 new work written expressly for the Cortona Sessions

     â€¢ possible opportunity to compose an additional work for the Saxophone Sessions
     â€¢ opportunity to participate in the Iron Composer Competition
     â€¢ group lessons with Cortona Sessions composition faculty
     â€¢ one-on-one coachings with performers
     â€¢ composition symposiums and lectures
     â€¢ opportunity to present their music in symposiums 
throughout the festival

     â€¢ round-trip train to Florence for excursion
     â€¢ valuable friendships and professional development

The 2015 Cortona Sessions will accept a small number of composers, age 18 and over as of the start of the festival.

 

Accepted participants will be asked to compose one new work for soloist or ensemble consisting of participating performers and faculty to be premiered at the Cortona Sessions. Works must be submitted by May 18 to be guaranteed performance at the Sessions. Works received after this date will not be guaranteed performances. Composers may also have the opportunity to submit pre-existing compositions for performance during the Sessions. In addition, composers may compose new works for saxophone solo or ensemble to be performed as part of the Saxophone Sessions.

 

Instrument Possibilities for Compositions:

(doubling possibilities will be determined after the application deadline)

flute:  C flute or alto flute (no piccolo)

clarinet:  B-flat or bass clarinet

saxophone:  sop/alto/tenor/bari

percussion:  marimba/vibraphone

small hand percussion may be available TBD - inquire

voice:  mezzo soprano

(other voice types will be determined after the application deadline)

piano:  preparation is available

violin

cello

 

Composer-in-Residence:  Frederic Rzewski

 

Renowned composer Frederic Rzewski will be in residence at the Cortona Sessions for several days. Composers will be able to work with him in symposiums and attend multiple lectures and concerts featuring Mr. Rzewski and his music.

application fee:  $25 (paid online via PayPal)

tuition:  $2,050USD (paid online via PayPal - can be paid in                                         installments with authorization)

14 nights in Hotel Oasi Neumann w/breakfast
